When many of us encounter something that inspires and uplifts us one of our first thoughts is to share it with those we love. The experience of learning and dancing in Tara’s mandala dance has been life changing for so many dancers it became necessary to organize something formal to enable the dance to fulfill it potential.
His Eminence Tai Situ Rinpoche envisioned the Tara Dance spreading throughout the world. He and other great Lamas have felt that this dance was a powerful vehicle to bring peace and healing to our troubled world.
But Rinpoche cautioned us that we should maintain the integrity of the Mandala Dance of Tara as a vehicle of liberation. |

Therefore it is important that students cultivate a basic understanding of the Tibetan Buddhist view and methodology. Through the Student Teacher program we provide direction and guidance so that the dance is shared in a profound way. No previous experience in Tibetan Buddhism is necessary and one does not need to consider herself a “Buddhist” to teach the Tara Dance. But one does need to understand the view and the method. |
The movements of the dance are simple and one does not need to be a trained dancer to master them. However there must be a willingness to conform to the movements that are taught. Most of the dance is choreographed. The movements, though easy to learn have profound significance. |
Because the dance is translated into several languages, if we keep the movements standard dancers can travel throughout the world and dance with any circle in any language.
We keep our student teachers informed of the offerings happening throughout the world. Tara Dancers are called to join together in pilgrimage to sacred sites and perform the dance. Lamas have encouraged us to welcome great teachers with an offering of the Tara Dance. Communities have invited the Tara Dancers to perform in festivals and at life ceremonies of birth, coming of age, marriage, and death. |

Student teachers are also expected to follow certain ethical behavior based on an understanding of the interconnectedness of all of life and the consequence of actions.
There is a basic financial support that is required by the program. It is minimal and there are ample scholarship opportunities for those who are sincere but with small personal means.

Anyone who is interested in deepening their understanding of Tara and the mind training practices that are the philosophical basis of the dance may join as a student with no obligation to pursue the path as a teacher.
Musicians interested in playing music for the Tara Dance are also welcome to join the Student/Teacher Program and work closely with Anahata Iradah, Tara Dhatu’s Artistic Director.
